There isn't one schedule that's right for everyone. If your teeth and gums are healthy and you're at low risk for oral disease, you may only need to see your dental hygienist once or twice a year. If you're at higher risk or have periodontal concerns, we may recommend visits every three to four months.

We'll base the recommendation on what we actually see in your mouth rather than putting everyone on the same schedule.

Your dental hygienist is looking at much more than how much plaque is on your teeth. We pay attention to your gum health, areas of inflammation or bleeding, tartar buildup, changes since previous appointments, and anything that may need Dr. Alpers' attention.

Depending on your individual needs, your hygiene visit may also involve periodontal measurements, digital X-rays, an oral cancer screening, and other preventive services.

Your dental hygienist plays an important role in evaluating your periodontal health. We look at factors such as inflammation, bleeding, buildup around or below the gumline, and measurements around your teeth to identify signs that your gums may not be healthy.

If we see something concerning, your hygienist and Dr. Alpers can evaluate the findings together and explain whether you need routine preventive care or additional periodontal treatment.

We use advanced dental technology to help our dental hygienists and Dr. Alpers see more than what is visible during a standard exam. This allows us to better understand your oral health and catch potential concerns early. This may include tools such as digital X-rays to view areas between and beneath the teeth, iTero 3D intraoral scanning for a detailed digital model of your mouth, VELscope oral cancer screening to evaluate soft tissues, saliva testing to assess oral bacteria when appropriate, and advanced laser treatment as part of periodontal care when recommended.

This technology does not replace the expertise of your dental hygienist or dentist; it enhances it. It gives us more complete information so we can clearly explain what we see, why it matters, and what your options are, rather than simply telling you that treatment is needed.
